Hard facts about the Security Guard Industry |

Large Workforce to fight for our labor rights
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, security guards and gaming surveillance officers hold more than 1.1 million jobs. Taking out gaming, the bureau estimates current security guard employment at about 995,510, with a mean hourly wage of $9.84 and a mean annual wage of $20,460.
Most states require that guards be licensed. By States requiring security officers to be licensed, they have done the organizing for us. All the security officer has to do now is JOIN S.E.W.U. According to survey, a majority of guarding companies finds the variety of regulations to be a challenge. To be licensed as a guard, individuals usually must be at least 18 years old, pass a background check, ACCEPT THE POVERTY PAYSCALE and complete classroom training in such subjects as property rights, emergency procedures and detention of suspected criminals. Drug testing often is required, and may be random and ongoing.
Security Officers are paid poverty wages, they have no company paid health plan, medical plan, dental plan or company provided life insurance. Yet thousands and thousands of security guard licenses are issued to first time applicants every year. The middle ground pay for security officers in 2006 was $23,620, according to a Labor Department survey. The low pay reflects cutthroat competition among security firms, who submit the lowest possible bids to win contracts. Lowball contracts also means less for training and benefits. Companies and clients must be taught…, POST 9/11 SECURITY IS PRIORITY!!!
Why any hard working wage earner would put themselves in harm’s way to earn as little as $7.00 per hour while protecting a multi-billion dollar property. Officers are being killed in the line of duty and guard companies refused to foot the burial expenses. We are our own worst enemy! We are over one million strong across the country and yet we allow a janitor’s union to represent some of us in California with a “master contract” that pays a whopping hourly wage of $8.00 P/H and 2 sick days per year.
The fear and intimidation from the security workers must come to an end should any officer across this country ever expects to see any real change in the compensation scale for this industry. |
